Princep Ghat, Most Beautiful Ghat of Kolkata
The Princep Ghat, probably the best place to offer mesmerizing ambiance in Kolkata, located right on the bank of Hooghly river. The monument was built by the citizen of Calcutta in 1841 by raising a fund of Rs. 12000, in the memory of versatile genius Late James Princep (Assay Master of Calcutta mint and secretary of Asiatic Society of Bengal). After that, the Princep Ghat became an important landing place of all dignitaries who came to Calcutta by sea. Although, this ghat is no more used for landings but attract a lot of people because of beautification work done by PWD, the government of West Bengal in 2012. If you ever visit Kolkata, this is one of the must-visit spots, one can not afford to miss.
There is a bridge over this beautiful place, Vidyasagar Setu (Second Hooghly Bridge) which is a symbol of excellence. This bridge gives a perspective to this monument of James Princep, altogether a beautiful frame to capture in both day & night. If you are fond of riding boats then just walk a bit towards the boating ghat, rent a boat (obviously bargain before boarding) and enjoy the ambiance during sunset.
How to Reach Princep Ghat
There is a railway station also named after this place, Princep Ghat. This railway circuit is a part of Circular Rail and travels most of the way alongside the Hooghly river.
There are buses to reach this place easily from most of the parts of the city. If you love ferry rides, you can opt for that too, although the nearest ferry ghat (Fairly Place) is approx two kilometers away, the pathway till Princep Ghat is well illuminated and beautifully decorated to compensate the efforts.
Princep Ghat Timings
Many couples, photographers, travelers, and families visit this place every day because of the sheer beauty this ghat offers. This place remains open from 5 AM to 11 PM throughout the year. According to me, the best suitable time to be here in the afternoon, around 4 PM. You will enjoy the garden in daylight, frame some awesome sunset moments. In the evening this whole place just upscaled with proper lighting.
Facilities Available in Princep Ghat
You will find a few stalls, selling snacks (Panipuri, Bhelpuri, etc.), ice cream, tea/coffee, etc. One pay & use toilet is also available, although sometimes it lacks cleanliness. There are guards available from Kolkata Police who ensure the peace inside the premises all the time by patrolling frequently.
Parking
No charges for motorcycle parking, free to all.
P.S. Please maintain the cleanliness of this place during your visit, use dustbins kept in places.
