Kolkata Tyre Park is the latest addition to the city of joy. This is the first of its kind in India, where the main motive of this park is to reuse the waste tires. In general, people either throw away used tyres or some people burn them, which makes the air polluted.

Hence, WBTC (West Bengal Tram Corporation) came up with an innovative idea to use these waste tyres to decorate the park. The Kolkata Tyre Park was inaugurated on 13th November 2020. Although the entire park is pretty small, but well decorated with trees, fountains, and lots of items made with tyres. Even though there are seating arrangements and snacks available in case you want to spend time with your dearest ones.

How to Reach Kolkata Tyre Park

Kolkata Tyre Park is located just beside Calcutta Tram Depot (WBTC Terminal), Esplanade. It is a 2-minute walk from the Esplanade metro or bus stop. Being the central point, the esplanade is well-connected from every corner of the city. You can take a bus, taxi, OLA, UBER, metro, or even tram (specific routes only) to reach here.

Kolkata Tyre Park Timings & Entry Fees

Kolkata Tyre Park remains open every day except Thursday from 8 AM to 8 PM at a nominal cost of Rs. 20 as an entry fee. Whereas if you have plans to visit the adjacent Smaranika Tram Museum, you can buy a combo ticket for Rs. 30 (separate tickets will cost you Rs. 20 each and are only available between 12 PM to 6:30 PM).

Note: You will get a maximum of 45 minutes to explore the place, though it is way more than what you will actually need.

There are numerous places to visit nearby; a few are listed below:

• By Walk – Smaranika Tram Museum, Sahid Minar, Lal Dighi, Millennium Park, Metcalfe, St. Johns Church.
• By Bus/Cab – Princep Ghat, Victoria Memorial, M.P. Birla Planetarium, Howrah Bridge, Rabindra Sadan, Mohor Kunj, Indian Museum, Jawaharlal Nehru Children’s Museum,  etc. 

Conclusion

Kolkata Tyre Park is worth visiting if you are nearby or have come for shopping in the Esplanade area. Do not forget to check out the Smaranika Tram Museum as well. This park is so small that you can easily explore it within 5 to 10 minutes.

On 3rd December 2020, New Town got a Coffee House in its crown near Amity University. Although by its name it does not look like a branch of the famous “Indian Coffee House,” but still the name “Coffee House” itself holds a prestigious heritage and a nostalgic feel to all Bengalis.

Today, we will share details like how to reach, timings, food menus, and available facilities in Coffee House New Town.

Indian Coffee House is an emotional nostalgia for all Bengalis. Since it was established, people, including famous poets, artists, etc., visit this place to meet friends (আড্ডা), read books, or write. It has served many world-famous artists like Amartya Sen, Satyajit Ray, Aparna Sen, etc. and became a heritage by legendary singer Manna Dey through his song “কফি হাউসের সেই আড্ডাটা আজ আর নেই”.

Indian Coffee House initially was Albert Hall, founded in April 1876, which was later converted to a cafe in 1942, followed by renaming to today’s famous Coffee House College Street in 1947.

Coffee House New Town is currently operating from 12 PM to 7 PM. As of now, due to a visitor spike, you may have to wait for 30 to 45 minutes for your turn to get inside. Even if you are planning to go single, you may need to share your table with others.

How to Reach Coffee House New Town

Coffee House New Town is located just opposite of Amity University near Eco Park. You can avail any bus to reach Rabindra Tirtha, Narkelbagan. From there HIDCO shuttle bus service (every 15-20 minutes) is available till Coffee House New Town for just 10 rupees. Otherwise, you can take your car or motorcycle or even a Taxi.

Indian Coffee House (College Street) is a nostalgic emotion to Bengalis, so the same kind of vibe is being replicated in a modern style. Similar to the old Coffee House, you can see the large hall, circular tables, long hanging fans, and even food menus. But to maintain the current standard of living, management has decided to add a few more amenities like AC, a library, a lift, and wall-hanging paintings. You can even feel the same kind of soothing but chaotic noise as the legendary college street Coffee House.

Mousuni Island is comparatively a newer and slightly offbeat weekend destination from Kolkata, although it is gaining popularity quite rapidly. The nature of the Bay of Bengal at Mousuni Island is different than even its closest destination, Bakkhali, more calm and narrow. On a full moon, the sea looks very beautiful.

In this Mousuni Island Tour Guide, we will discuss Mousuni Island Hotels, Transportation options, the best time to visit the place, etc, so that you can easily plan a weekend trip from Kolkata. Also, there are a few tips at the end to make your experience better.

Being a remote island, this place offers a lot of greenery, less pollution, and a different flavor altogether. If you are tired of your regular hustle-bustle and want a very quick relaxation before joining work on Monday, just visit Mousuni Island on a Saturday, spend a night, and gather much-needed power rest to fuel another month or so.

How to Reach Mousuni Island

Mousuni Island is not that far from Kolkata, just 120 km. But there is no direct transport available from Kolkata, you have to break your journey several times before reaching Mousuni Island, and due to that fact, the traveling time is comparatively much longer, approx 5-6 hours. You have two options to start from Kolkata, either by Bus or Train.

• By Bus: You can board Kolkata to Bakkhali Govt. Bus and get down at 10 Mile Bazaar. From there, take an e-rickshaw (Toto) to Putibunia Ghat. Then take a ferry to cross the river, and after that take another e-rickshaw (Toto) to reach Baliara (main spot).
• By Train: Take Sealdah – Namkhana Local and from Namkhana Station, you can reserve an e-rickshaw, Maruti van, motor van, or Maximo (depending upon your group size) for either Putibunia Ghat or Hujjuter Ghat. Then take a ferry to cross the river and take another e-rickshaw (Toto) to reach Baliara (main spot).

General Transportation Fare

• Kolkata to Namkhana train fare is Rs. 25/- per head.
• Kolkata to Bakkhali Bus Fare Rs. 105/- (non-AC) and Rs. 240/- (AC) per head.
• Namkhana Station to Patibunia/Hujjuter Ghat Rs. 40 to 60 per head, depending on your bargaining skill and season.
• 10-mile bazaar to Putibunia Ghat costs Rs. 15/- in an e-rickshaw or motor van.
• Hujjuter Ghat and Putibunia Ghat ferry costs Rs. 3/- and Rs. 5/- respectively. The ferry service will be available from 6 AM to 8:30 PM every 45 minutes. The express ferry is also available for Rs 10/-; it won’t wait that long.
• The E-rickshaw fare from Kusumtala Ghat (opposite of Hujjeter Ghat) and Saltlake Ghat (opposite of Patibuni Ghat) costs Rs. 35/- and 25/- respectively.

You can also visit Mousuni Island directly via motorcycle; you need to pay Rs. 60 to cross the river along with the motorcycle. Don’t worry the ferry guy will help you to transfer the motorcycle. I am planning to go there again on my motorcycle very soon.

In case you are planning a road trip to Mousuni Island by car, you have the option to safely park the car near Hujjuter Ghat, although I have no idea how much you need to pay for parking.

Accommodation in Mousuni Island

Due to government restrictions, building hotels is not allowed on Mosuni Island; hence, you can stay in either tents or mud houses. Any adventure seekers would love to stay in these seaside camps. Approximately, double stay tents, four-bedded tents, and Mud-house Rs. 900, Rs. 1000, and Rs. 1200 respectively (per head cost including food). But during peak season (December to February), they charge higher.

I have personally stayed at the Prantik Camp, as one of my relatives suggested. But that place was okayish, especially compared with other camps in terms of decoration and service. Although they told us, recent Amphan Cyclone did heavy damage to their camp, and before the season starts, they will decorate their camp too. But I must say the toilets and kitchen were very clean.

Apparently, Baliara Beach Tent, Backpacker’s Camp, Nil Nirjone, Jolphoring Beach Camp, and Baluka Bela are better, as I have seen many good reviews in multiple Facebook groups.

As per the COVID guidelines are concerned camp guys sanitized our tents and used masks all the time. As per them government has instructed to have a maximum of 30 guests at a time.

Food is included within accommodation, so don’t worry about paying extra. Generally, they serve food four times as follows

• Welcome Drinks: Coconut Water/lemon water
• Lunch: Rice, Dal, Alu Bhaja, Sabji, Fish/Egg curry
• Evening Snacks: Tea and Pakoda (Onion/Cauliflower)
• Dinner: Roti/Rice, Chicken Curry
• Breakfast: Tea, Puri, Sabji, and Boiled Egg

You can also have a barbecue in the evening for an additional cost. Generally, they will charge you Rs. 250-350 per kg of chicken, including salad.

Things to do in Mousuni Island

Frankly, Mousuni Island does not have any places to roam around except the seashore. This place is solely known for relaxation, spending time with oneself, friends, or family. You can watch the sunset from the camp or walk the beach, take a boat ride, or plan a Bar-B-Que evening with music. The night sky and full moon look great here. 

While returning from Mousing Island, you may consider visiting Bakkhali (approx 25 km) or Gangasagar (approx 72 km).

Best Time to Visit

Mousuni Island is best visited in winter, but being very close to Kolkata, people now visit the place throughout the year. As I always said, if you love greenery and want to witness a different sea, you must visit in the monsoon too.

This place is just to get relaxation from the regular busy life, so you can visit any time whenever you feel saturated.

Tips

• Being a remote place, local tends to charge you extra for everything like packaged drinking water, snacks, cigarettes, liquor, etc. If possible, carry as much as possible.
• Always bargain in e-rickshaws and camps to get better rates.
• If you are not visiting  Mousuni Island during peak season, deciding your stay on spot will be a better idea, as you can choose as per your need. But if you are late and have not booked any camp, you may miss lunch.
• Airtel and Jio performed good, but still, every camp has Wi-Fi. You just need to ask for it.
• I have not noticed any ATM there, so carrying cash could be a good idea. Although most of the camps accept online payments through GPay, Phonepe, etc.
• There is no attached toilet available for the obvious reasons, but the shared toilets are clean enough. Generally, they allow large groups to have a separate toilet, just ask for it.

Conclusion

Mousuni Island is definitely a worth visiting weekend destination from Kolkata, provided you are ready for an approx 5 hours long journey (one side). If you like city life or a little bit congested places, then you may feel a little bored. Otherwise, someone who loves nature or spending time with him/herself will revisit again and again.

After a long wait, Kolkata people are finally getting a piece of relief as the first phase (phase 1A) of the East-West corridor Metro has started its operation from today, i.e., 14th February 2020. In this post, we will be discussing every detail you must know about the Kolkata Metro East-West Metro corridor, even before you take a ride, like routes, timings, fares, available facilities, etc.

Kolkata was the first city in the country to have a metro service on 24th October 1984. To date, it has been extended till Garia on the southern side and Noapara on the northern side, mainly covering the North-South corridor. But now with the East-West Corridor, it is expanding further to connect many parts of the City.

The Kolkata East-West Metro was inaugurated by current Railway Minister Shri Piyush Goyal on 13th February 2020.

Ease of commuting in the Metro

No doubt metro service eases everyone’s life as a faster and eco-friendly commute. Generally, a Bus or Cab takes almost an hour to cross 4-5 kilometers, but in the Metro, it takes only 10 to 15 minutes.

Security Measures in New Metro Corridor

• As of now, 5 advanced AC racks are available.
• Screen doors are also installed in every station to prevent falling on the lines intentionally or accidentally.
• Metro racks, as well as platforms, are under CCTV surveillance
• These advanced metro racks can easily operate at 80 KM/H while consuming lower energy.
• Emergency telephones are available at platforms to connect with the control room immediately.

• Lifts (max 13 people) and escalators
• Public Toilet
• Wheelchair
• Drinking-Water
• First-Aid Kit
• 2/4 wheeler parking, but it seems reserved for Metro officials only.

Current Kolkata East-West Metro Fare

As of now, there are only two zones operational.

• Zone 1 – INR 5 (0-2KM)
• Zone 2 – INR 10 (2-5KM)

Certainly, existing Kolkata Metro Smart cards will continue to work, don’t worry. Metro token or ticket gets a fresh look.

P.S. Kolkata Metro fare is still the lowest in the country.

Phase 1A of the Kolkata East-West Metro service will operate from 8 AM to 8 PM every day at 20-minute intervals. Also, each stop is 20 seconds.

Obviously, this huge Kolkata Metro expansion project is divided into many phases to ensure better and efficient scalability. Only phase 1A is functional as of now, while other phases are also making remarkable progress.

• Upcoming Phase 1B – Linking with Phool Bagan Metro Station (at the trial stage)
• Phase 2 – Link with Howrah Maidan via Sealdah, Esplanade, BBD Bag, Howrah.
• Phase 3 – Extending the east-west metro corridor with Teghoria from Sector V via Keshtopur, Dum Dum Park, Baguihati, and Raghunathpur.

Additionally, a few other lines of Kolkata Metro services are in the pipeline, like Joka to Esplanade, Dakhineswar to Airport, and Noapara to Barasat. Finally, all lines will be interconnected with each other for better accessibility.

Smaranika Tram Museum is one of the bold efforts to showcase the history of Tram and its heritage in Kolkata. Tram is no doubt an eco-friendly commute. More than 200 developed cities adopted this mode of transportation lately. Kolkata was one of the first cities to have tram service since the British era, 1873.

Now in the daily busy schedule, many people want to travel fast. Hence the tram service started to lose its charm day by day. Not only that poor maintenance, insufficient funding, and extensive work of Kolkata Metro services are also a few of the prominent reasons.

I still remember from my childhood days, there used to be a separate path for the tram. But as the population, vehicles, as well as traffic increase, many tramways started to disappear. Nowadays, near the Fort William area only has a separate tramway in the entire city. Correct me if I am wrong.

Coming to the Smaranika Tram Museum, it was inaugurated in 2014. The vintage Tram from 1938, CTC 142, completely converted to the current Smaranika Tram Museum at Nonapukur Workshop, Kolkata. Till then, it started to attract many visitors especially youngsters.

If you ever took a tram ride in Kolkata, you must know that the coaches used to divide into First class and Second class. The difference was, First class used to have fans and Second class not, hence the fare was different too. But later on 15th August 2013, CTC (Calcutta Tram Corporation) decided to match the fare and facilities of both the classes.

Before I discuss the Smaranika Tram Museum, you should look into the history of Tram services in Kolkata.

History of Tram in Kolkata

Tram was an integral part of Kolkata transportation since 1873 from its first public inaugurations. Staring from Horse-drawn Tram to steam engine tram to AC Tram, Tram evolved a lot in the last 147 years.

• 1873: First Trams run in Kolkata on 24th February 1873 (Discontinued on 20th November).
• 1880: Tram service restarts.
• 1882: Steam Engine-driven Tram introduce.
• 1902: Electricity power tram was introduced in Calcutta.
• 1905: Electricity power tram was introduced in Howrah.
• 1920: Bus service was introduced and later discontinued in 1925.
• 1927: Own power station at Nonapukur was closed and started to power from CESC (Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation).
• 1943: Howrah Kolkata tram routes linked.
• 1967: The government takes over CTC management.
• 1978: CTC, becomes a government company through enactment.
• 1982: Steel body tram introduced.
• 1992: Bus services re-introduced.
• 2008: Polycarbonate sheet covered tram introduced.
• 2013: 19th June Air Conditioned trams introduced. The same year, on 15th August Trams were made classless.

This Tram museum remains open from 1 PM to 8 PM every day except Thursday.

There is a ticket for INR 10 per person. You can spend a maximum of 45 minutes inside the Museum.

What to see at Smaranika Tram Museum

Once you enter the Tram Museum you will see the brief history of Tram in Kolkata. Afterward, all types of miniature Tram models are showcased along with short descriptions.

Then, various tickets & special tickets, special coupons, passes, and tram training school badges are also displayed.

Facilities inside Tram Museum

There are two coaches in the Tram Museum, as Cafe and Museum. This complete air-conditioned museum can accommodate approximately 15 people at once. While the Museum section hardly takes 15 minutes’ time. You can spend some time in the cafe section with a cup of tea/coffee and watch the documentaries (clips from movies featuring Tram) playing on television.

Generally, you can expect a long queue as almost 150 to 200 people visit this museum everyday.

You can also purchase postcards of Kolkata Tram at a very nominal cost.

Rules to Follow

Generally, photography and videography are not allowed inside the Tram museum to maintain the crowd properly. But you can always ask at the ticket counter for permission.

How to Reach Smaranika Tram Museum

Being located at the heart of the city, Esplanade, this Museum is easily accessible from different corners. The nearest Metro station and Bus stoppage are less than 100 meters away. Also, railway stations like Howrah and Sealdah are within 4 kilometers.

I personally want Tram services to grow further as it is the most eco-friendly way of travel in this over-polluted world. Yes, I understand that it is comparatively slower than other transports. But does that really matter? Because if it gets its own separate track it can easily run faster like early days.

There are few downsides too like electrical failure and outline problems. I believe concerned authorities can tackle these issues very easily.

As a Citizen of Kolkata, I believe everyone including the government should keep this Tram service alive not only as a heritage but also as an eco-friendly transportation option.

Brief History about Kolkata Book Fair

• 1974 – Some young publishers of Kolkata certainly decided to organize a commercial book fair like Frankfurt Book Fair to gather book lovers.
• 1975 – The Publishers & Booksellers Guild was formed. Sushil Mukherjea became its founder President while Jayant Manaktala, it’s first General Secretary.
• 1976 – On March 5, 1976, the first Book Fair was organized with 56 stalls of 34 publishers, at the ground beside Victoria Memorial. Surprisingly, the entry fee was 50 paisa then.
• 1983 – A prominent member of the Guild, Shri Asoke Ghosh, got the Kolkata Book Fair its international accreditation.
• 1988 – Once the Book Fair started to grow, it had to move to Maidan to accommodate more publishers.
• 1991 – The Fair started to have a focal theme every year like the Frankfurt book fair. Certainly, the first focal theme was based on Indian state Assam.
• 1997 – For the first time, the Book Fair focal theme was a foreign country, France.
• 2007 – A PIL (Public Interest Litigation) was filed against the fair at Maidan. As a result, the fair moved to Saltlake Stadium.
• 2008 – Again, a PIL was filed against the fair at Park Circus Maidan. Hence, the Guild decided to postpone the fair.
• 2009 – The 33rd International Kolkata Book Fair was organized at Milan Mela ground.
• 2010 – The executive committee decides to waive off the entry fee if a person purchased books more than INR 200.
• 2011 – State government gave Guild an NGO status, hence Guild made entry to the fair free.
• 2018 – Again due to renovation work, the Book Fair had to move Central Park, Saltlake. The focal theme was France.
• 2019 – The Theme Country was Guatemala. “Buy books and win a Book Library” the grand finale of the daily lottery also organized.

Book Fair timing

• Date: 29th January 2020 –  9th February 2020
• Time: 12 PM – 8 PM

Kolkata Literature Festival will take place at Kolkata Book Fair for 3 days, February 6 to 8, 2020 from 1 PM to 9 PM.

Since 2018, GUILD and concerned authorities are organizing Kolkata Book in Saltlake Central Park. Earlier, it used to locate at Milan Mela Ground.

How to Reach Kolkata Book Fair

Certainly, the book fair venue, Saltlake Central Park is easily accessible by bus from almost every corner of the city. In addition, each year the State Government allocate special buses from different part of the city. As a result, Special bus services will be available from Karunamoyee Bus stand between 3 PM to 9 PM. Below are the channel-wise routes this special bus service going to cover

2. Howrah (S-12, AC-59)
3. Thakurpukur (S-16), Tollygunge Metro
4. Jadavpur AC Bus (AC-9)

Shared auto services are also available from Ultadanga (INR 15) and different parts of Saltlake.

Kolkata Book Fair Gate themes (2020)

This year, entry gates are made based on wisdom, culture, architecture. Gate no 1, 2, 6, and 9 are Sampriti Gate, India Gate, Biswa Bangla Gate, and replica gate of Jorasanko Thakurbari. In addition, Gate no 5, the Theme Gate is the replica of Bolshoi Theatre of Russia.

Available Facilities

• Like every year, paid parking is available. INR 20 & 30 for motorcycle and car respectively for every 2 hours.
• Ground Map guide will be given while you enter from any of the nine gates.
• Toilets are available almost every corner of the fair
• Popular food joints like Mio Amore, Bancharam, Goutam’s, etc available in the food court area.
• Mobile ATM counters are also available.
• You may sit and watch cultural programs near Jago Bangla stall, WBCPCR stall, etc.

Safety & Rules

• • The Book Fair has adequate CCTVs.
  • The concerned authority also deployed Man counting machines and scanners.
  • Adequate fire tenders and fire fighting arrangements have been done.
  • Certainly, smoking and littering inside the fair is strictly prohibited.

1. 30th January 2020 – Ashok Sarkar Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Vadim Polonsky. Same day Focal Theme, Russian Day will also be celebrated.
2. 2nd February 2020 – Children’s Day will be celebrated in the fairground.
3. 9th February 2020 – Bangladesh Day will be celebrated and The prize distribution ceremony will take place.

Most of the Durga Pujas in these areas are famous for their award-winning art creation. Hence, we outlined the best possible map for South Kolkata Durga Puja hopping. This guide will also be divided into two parts, one day and two days plan. Also, we will be mentioning approximate distance and transport options adjacent to the Puja names.

Durga Puja is the Bengalis’ biggest festival, when Kolkata gets more colorful lights and decorations. Various theme pandals are made to attract more visitors, centering worship of goddess Durga and her children (Ganesh, Karthik, Lakshmi, and Saraswati). Millions of people hop into pandals, dodging crowds, break their diet habits to eat anything, and wear the current trend. People are fascinated by award-winning pandals, idols, and even ambiance. We start to do reverse countdowns to feel every inch of happiness. In the future, we will discuss the mythological significance of Durga Puja.

Almost every state of India, even many foreign cities, also witness Durga Puja. This emotion, rituals, and happiness bind everyone tightly, sidelining their religion and caste.

From an Indian economic perspective, Durga Puja holds a very important role. Bengalis spend close to 30% – 50% of their annual budget, be it in food, transportation, shopping, and even a few people like to travel to places during these holidays. Almost every brand puts advertisements, stalls to promote and sell their products. Nowadays, Durga Puja is not just about worshiping god but a huge platform for business, and every year this perspective is evolving rapidly. But for Bengalis, Durga Puja is something that can’t be explained in words, pure happiness.

In this very article, we will discuss Durga Puja 2025 Dates, Transportation Options & Parking, Shopping & Joy Rides, Foods, and Safety rules we should follow.

Transportation options & Parking

Although Kolkata has every kind of transportation from budget to luxury, and they become more frequent during puja days but the only problem one can face is the price hike. Yes, almost every Auto routes and cab services like Ola, Uber standardize their rates at 1.5X to 2X minimum. Bus and Metro service operate at regular price seems to be the cheapest and most budget-friendly options, although both have their demerits. While the first one takes more time to reach the destination and the latter one starts its operation at noon and continues till early morning the next day (Saptami to Nabami). Below are the metro timings from last year

No doubt the best option could be walking small distances between pandals. We will be sharing our experience in the recommended sequence to watch pandals to minimize time waste without bombing your pocket.

Lastly, a few people love to take their car or a rented car to hop pandals; for them, parking will be the most frustrating issue. As millions of people visit pandals every year, Kolkata police barricade the roads to ensure everyone’s safety and manage the crowd effectively. Due to this fact, most of the time, one has to walk a little more to get to the car park. Please keep in mind the aged persons, children might need a car for obvious reasons (Best time to minimize this hassle will be early morning, 5 AM to 2 PM), but still, using the combination of walking and public transport remains the best choice.

Shopping and Joy Rides

Many of us love to purchase goods from the Puja pandal premises. Be sure those are well-priced and functional; sometimes, due to a rush, we may get cheated. Also, check the balance before you leave the stall/shop. Joy rides are one of the fascinating activities in pandals, especially for kids. Always accompany them and make sure that the ride does not pose health hazards to them.

Foods

This is my favorite part during puja, we get to taste almost every possible variety of foods at a comparatively cheap price, obviously at the cost of quality. But for a few days, I feel okay to break the diet or even quality hunting. Although the food should be prepared or at least served hygienically. Mostly chaats, Panipuri (ফুচকা), ice creams, and hot/cold beverages get sold continuously, so there are high chances of getting those fresh.

Safety rules we should follow

1. Please cooperate with Kolkata Police and Local Volunteers, although sometimes we feel they may take longer, but believe us, that is for our safety.
2. Jaywalking the road or jumping the barricades may save you a bit, but could risk your life.
3. Be careful of your belongings, especially in the crowd.
4. Report missing objects and persons/children to the Pandal committee. While the chances of getting your belongings back are rare, at least you will find your close ones.
5. Ask rates before boarding Autos or cabs.
6. Have junk food but hygienic.
7. Don’t push the crowd or misbehave with others; eventually, all will get a chance.
8. Take some cash aside for emergency situations like pickpockets or baggage being misplaced.
9. Don’t push yourself too much; otherwise, you may not be able to enjoy the whole Puja.
10. In case of any problem, feel free to seek help from the Kolkata Police or Local Volunteers. 
11. We all love to make memories by taking a few selfies or photographs, but we often forget that this might slow down the crowd flow or create a rush among people waiting outside. Take photographs and selfies during the move. We should be happy to capture the moments rather not being selfish.
12. Don’t throw garbage like plastic, food, bottles on roads, but in designated bins/places. We should keep our city clean.

Lastly, thanks to Kolkata Police for managing this biggest festival with ease, their continuous dedication and duty always keep us safe. They also put the nearest pandal direction board, publish print-ready hand maps, and most importantly, control traffic congestion.

Most of us like to hop into as many pandals as possible, but few of them know the correct sequence to minimize time waste, sometimes even miss the famous puja pandal. So, we will bring you the recommended sequence based on our experience.

The Kolkata RBI museum is an effort by the Reserve Bank of India to showcase the history of world currency, how it evolved, the importance of gold in the economy & few fun facts about gold as well. It also portrays the evolution of RBI (Reserve Bank of India), in the last 84 years, modernized digital currency, and many more. In addition, you get to see various types of coins used across the world. A few videos, slideshows, and models also display the changes in currency over the centuries.

What is the Reserve Bank of India?

RBI, the Reserve Bank of India, is a body responsible for maintaining a crucial part of the financial structure in the country, also considered a Central Banking Institution of all. They print paper currencies and make coins in places for us within a pre-defined policy. It commenced on 1st April 1935 and has been serving to date for more than 84 years. After independence on 15th August 1947, the RBI was nationalized on 1st January 1949.

The RBI plays an important part in the Development Strategy of the Government of India. It is a member bank of the Asian Clearing Union. The general superintendence and direction of the RBI is entrusted with the 21-member central board of directors: the governor; four deputy governors; two finance ministry representatives (usually the Economic Affairs Secretary and the Financial Services Secretary); ten government-nominated directors to represent important elements of India’s economy; and four directors to represent local boards headquartered at Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and the capital New Delhi. Each of these local boards consists of five members who represent regional interests, the interests of co-operative and indigenous banks. To know more about RBI, click here.

Additionally, there is a section to display the importance of gold and where we stand as gold producers in the world. You can also witness a demo gold vault there, locks used to secure the vaults, and a gold bar of 12.5 Kg.

Even you can try to lift the bar, a fun fact is that the same size of iron bar weighs 5 Kg only. Gold is 2.5 times heavier than iron. In another corner, you can weigh yourself on a scale of standard 12.5 kg scale and a 1 Kg gold bar simulation.

Various machines in the note printing process are also showcased, like note stitching machines, note punching machines, bond maker machines, etc. A few tools, like a lantern, seal, gala shovel, UV lamp, knives, safe box, weights, and various locks, are on display.

Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 05:00 PM. The Museum remains closed on Monday & National Holidays (26th January, 15th August, 2nd October).

In case you need it, there is a very clean and well-maintained washroom available for use. A dedicated Kid arena is also available where children can play some indoor games like Snakes and Ladders, Carrom, etc., as well as participate in the quiz to enhance their knowledge. Additionally, to make your visit more memorable, you may purchase items from Souvenir shops, made from shredded notes and coins.

Food option near the Museum

Being in an office area, you have multiple cheap shops available nearby selling puri-sabji, roti-sabji, lassi, sweets, fruits, etc. These roadside shops remain closed on Sunday, and for obvious reasons, most of them only accept cash payments.

Rules at Kolkata RBI Museum

• Maintain silence in the exhibition gallery.
• Deposit bags at the designated counter against a refundable token.
• Put mobile phones in silent mode.
• You can use your earphones or borrow from the reception counter.
• You can carry cameras inside the gallery.
• Do not litter or take eatables inside the gallery.
• You are not allowed to smoke inside the premises.
• Touch artifacts not allowed.
• Above all, while entering the gaming zone, take off your shoes to keep the place clean.

How to Reach the RBI Museum

This museum is located just beside HSBC Bank (Hong Kong Building), Dalhousie (BBD Bagh). Therefore, buses are available from every corner of the city, even you can reach the Central metro station and then take a bus for 10 minutes to reach. Also, the nearest Landmarks are Lal Dighi, GPO, High Court, Banksal Court, and Raj Bhawan.
